One of the few books that truly conveys a life as lived from the inside. It is a reader's joy, and a path to empathy and shared humanity."

A BOOK CLUB FAVORITE

Iron Jane Book Group -- Santa Cruz, CA

The perfect book club book.  We have never read a book that everyone enjoyed, but we were all really smitten with The Eighth Promise.  It is a compelling story filled with love, drama, wisdom, sadness, joy and betrayal.  This book touches upon all of the important themes of family love, parents and children, immigrant dreams and realities, prejudice and politics.  Even more importantly, it is a memoir, a record one family’s struggle for acceptance and prosperity in a new country.

Chancellor Robert Hemenway, University of Kansas, Lawrence

I admire The Eighth Promise -- one of the best explorations of a man’s relationship with his mother in modern American literature.  I recommend it to everyone.

Capitol Book Group Annual Author Dinner

We were all so pleased to have selected The Eighth Promise --  inspiring, rich, and gripping.  The stories about they way your family grew up and their community of support reminded us that the simple things of life, often taken for granted, and of how precious they are. We were really pleased that your mother could join us.  She is such a delight.

The author’s answers to our questions about the writing, the narrative choices, and the many facets in the book were both entertaining and thought-provoking.
